Often, the predator is larger than its prey. The old animals, in turn, are not as vigorous as they have been during their prime and so would not be able to defend themselves fully as they have been. The young are without sufficient experience or knowledge yet are highly vulnerable to predator attacks. Using predation, the organisms get the energy to increase their life and reproduce to sustain the existence of their species.Īnimals that are an easy target include the young and the old. How does predation work? In another context, predation means the reliance of one organism on another by consuming it as its food. ![]() Source: Maria Victoria Gonzaga for .Īn ecological science definition of predation is that it is an ecological process where energy is transferred from one living being to another based on the nature and behavior of the predator. The process in which one animal kills and consumes it as its food is called predation. What is predation in biology? In biology, predation is a common feeding behavior of natural animals, plants, and microorganisms where one species feeds on another for its survival. Examples are wolves hunting a deer or a moose, an owl hunting the mice, and the lion hunting various animals. Thus, in carnivorous interaction, one animal feeds on another. A carnivore is an animal that gets its energy only by eating meat or animal tissues. The best example of predation is in carnivorous interaction. The one that is killed to be eaten is known as prey. The animal that kills another animal to feed on is called a “ predator“. The zebra has good wide eyesight in order to escape the predators and see them before the predator like the lion hunts them and kills them. What does predation mean? What is predation? We can define predation as the ecological process in which an animal (or an organism) kills and feeds on another animal (or an organism). This is because the lion has no natural predators so they have not needed to adapt and evolve, to give them an advantage to their eyesight to survive. The zebra also has visual sensory organs, as it is a prey species it needs to have a much better wide field of vision compared to the lion, which has a forward focused eyesight. The lion has not got large ears like the zebra but has adapted to be well camouflaged and hidden whilst having the well adapted hearing for the location of predators. They have large ears which are essential for picking up sound waves from other animals like predators and some members of their herd. The zebra also has a good sensory organs such as the ear for good hearing. Due to this amazing adaptation lions are able to hear prey and other noises from up to a mile away, as well as for communication with other lions. Their ears are very flexible which can adjust to the way sound waves are carried within the atmosphere for optimum hearing. Its hearing is also important for it to understand where the perfect place would be to position itself without being heard by other animals, in order to not scare the prey away, and to carry out a successful hunt. Sensory adaptations for the lion includes excellent hearing, this is important to hear where prey such as zebras are situated amongst the savannah. The zebra instead has then evolved to survive in a way to avoid or decrease the chances of its species from being hunted down to extinction by these predators like the lion. For example, the lion has adapted to hunt zebra in multiple different ways in order to gain a meal in the most efficient way by often using little energy or certain camoflage and hunting techniques. Predators have evolved with certain skeletal structures adapted to eating and hunting prey species. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Predator adaptations vs Prey ![]()
